Seniors

Because a Smile Never Gets Old
Bonham Dental Arts has had the luxury of watching many of our patients reach retirement age and beyond. We are aware of the difficulties senior citizens face regarding decisions about their teeth and general dental health. Having practiced dentistry for over 26 years, Dr. Chris Bonham is very experienced in treating seniors and helping them with choices about their dental care. With aging come reduced levels of growth and repair for all normal tissues — part of the process that leads to human maturation. In addition, seniors with systemic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are twice as likely to develop gum disease — the number one cause of adult tooth loss. As such, stresses resulting from impaired slips and falls impact dental and periodontal (gum) health among seniors more than among younger people. Further, seniors often take prescription drugs to address health issues, and these can have side effects that lead to degradation of teeth, gums and mouth.

Bonham Dental Arts will carefully evaluate all areas of concern, and then offer simple therapies that will restore oral health. Our doctors may suggest additional cleanings, periodontal therapy, and restorative work or replacement teeth. With sedation dentistry and convenient payment options, seniors can get the care they need — and deserve. With all the advances in dental care, treatment, and technologies, it is possible to keep your teeth for a lifetime!

Dental Care for Seniors
Age in and of itself is not a dominant or sole factor in determining oral health. However, advancing age puts many seniors at risk for a number of dental health problems, such as the following:

•   Darkened teeth are caused, to some extent, by changes in dentin — the bone-like tissue that underlies the tooth enamel — and by a lifetime of consuming stain causing foods and beverages.
•   Dry mouth is caused by reduced saliva flow, which can be a result of cancer treatments that use radiation to the head and neck area, as well as certain diseases and medications.
•   Diminished sense of taste can be caused by advancing age, diseases, medications, and dentures.
•   Root decay is caused by exposure of the tooth root to decay-causing acids. The tooth roots become exposed as gum tissue recedes from the tooth.
•   Gum Disease is caused by plaque and made worse by food left in teeth, use of tobacco products, poor fitting bridges and dentures, poor diets, and certain diseases, such as anemia, cancer, and diabetes. This is often a problem for older adults.
•   Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss.
•   Uneven jawbone is caused by tooth loss.
•   Ill-fitting dentures, which is caused by inflammation of the tissue underlying a denture, results from poor dental hygiene, or a buildup of fungus.
•   Thrush, and overgrowth of fungus in the mouth, may be caused by diseases or drugs that affect the immune system.
